The method I use borrows from the “Rule of Threes” used in survival training, think about resources in terms of urgency. Survival depends on addressing the most immediate need first.

You can live 3 hours without adequate shelter in extreme environment,
you can live 3 day without water and for about 3 weeks without food. So if you are stranded in the cold, shelter keeps you alive.

The first goal in finding resources is to determine a persons most critical need and focus on that need first. This is not always easy as many people in crisis often feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to begin, this is where your lived experience becomes their first resource. Peers create connection, and through that connection people often discover the first step they need to take on their recovery journey.
